The Cockspur Lighthouse

The Savannah Cockspur Lighthouse
Built in eighteen eighty five
Upon an oyster-bed foundation
Has now all these years survived.

For much more than a century
It has braced many a storm.
And though blemished by the ages,
It’s survived, but is worn.

During Savannah’s Civil War
While in the line of fire
It did not suffer damages
‘Tis something to admire.

Tho’ abandoned by the coastguard
In nineteen-forty-nine,
‘Twas embraced by Park Service
And continued then to shine.

In light of antique sentiments,
It stands a national monument.
