A Diehard Staple
Treading the corn fields of long ago
© 2016 w. salley
Another era in space and time.
Tall the stalks and rich the green
A food commodity so prime.
Shucking corn was lots of fun,
But seeing a worm tucked within
The lovely, soft, luxurious silk
Almost made one shed their skin.
Alluring were the ears of corn
Golden yellow, tender and ripe.
'Come,' bade the chef’s crude caldron
Mid luring eye and stomach gripe.
So great was the demand for corn
And equally was the supply.
Such golden staple of the day
Was a diamond in the rye.
