The Halloweens of My Youth

It was a very long time that
Halloween was part of my youth.
However, it no longer is;
But memories can haunt in truth.

The costumes and activities,
Advertisement and graphic art
Would spin a surreal atmosphere.
Anticipation? Off the chart!

Old-wives tales. Spoofs. Fables and spooks.
The weird trajectories they spun,
Weaved life's "canvas" of halloween:
An eerie land of 'fear' and 'fun.'

Certain dynamics charged the air:
Decorated pumpkins, full moon.
Old houses, cobwebs, bats and fog.
Black cats, and witches on their brooms.

So, when I was a little child,
(With all my imperfections too),
I thought and acted like a child.
I understood like children do.

But, now that I am an adult,
I've tucked away the childish things;
However, every now and then,
Those long-lost 'memories' will ring.
